Flag waving, proud Americans lined San Benito street Sunday morning to honor those that have served our country during the Veterans Day parade.

On this important day, Persian Gulf War veteran Richard Herrera Jr. said it’s “a day to thank each other for their service to this country.”

Herrera, the Veterans Day Parade coordinator, said that although it is “a time to remember our service to the country,” the day also is a time to support the community.

One of the ways to do both service to other veterans and the community is the annual parade. The parade, which begins near Haydon and San Benito streets at 2 p.m., will honor the Air Force as it is celebrating 2008 as its 60th anniversary. Prior to being called the Air Force, the group was known as the Army Air Corps.

A great way for the community to support the veterans is to attend the VFW Barbecue at the Veterans Memorial Building. The BBQ will feature tri-tip, beans, garlic bread and salad. An $8 donation is requested.

Also happening on Veterans Day:

At 11:11 a.m., the local VFW and American Legion posts will hold the traditional ceremony that marks the end of World War I. It was on Nov. 11, 1918 at 11 a.m. that marked the signing of the Armistice ending that war. In 1954, Armistice Day was officially changed to Veterans Day to celebrate the contributions of all American soldiers by President Eisenhower.

New to the Veterans Day festivities is the veterans information fair. The fair is for all veterans and men or women in the national guard to talk about job possibilities and state and federal benefits. It will be under way from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of the Veterans Memorial Building.
