Sophomores Tessa Fischer, Cheyenne Hambey, Susie Schaefer and Bri Romero, who helped lead the Gavilan women’s volleyball team to the Coast Conference South championship, had their season efforts recognized last week when they were named to the All-Conference team.

“They were some of the most consistent players we had year long,” said third-year head coach Kevin Kramer, who was distinguished as the conference’s Coach of the Year. “Bri was solid week in and week out. Cheyenne and Tessa held our offense together and allowed everyone to do what they do. Susie was great at distributing the ball.

“We could’ve nominated a few more, but we are only allowed four.”

Romero finished the regular season with a team-high 162 kills. Hambey ripped down 153 kills and Fischer totaled 136 from her middle blocker position.

Shaefer was among the assist leaders in the conference, putting up 522 assists for a nearly eight-per-match average.

“They were really the four main pieces of our offense,” Kramer said.

Romero was also named to the Northern California All-Region team, an honor delegated to only 12 players in the state.

The Rams posted a 17-7 overall record and a dominating 9-1 conference mark on their way to the program’s first championship, giving them a berth into California Community College North Regional playoffs, another program first.

They were ousted in a highlight-reel five-game loss to Diablo Valley in the opening round two weeks ago, ending their season of milestones.

As for his coach of the year award, Kramer said it is more of a team award than anything else.

“It’s really a tribute to (the players),” Kramer said. “I’m just showing up and doing my job. To get recognized is awesome, but it’s because the girls battled every day.”
