State Sen. Jeff Denham handily won the recall election that has lost any momentum well before Tuesday.

The Republican senator from Merced who represents San Benito County beat the recall effort by a huge margin, according to unofficial results.

The recall effort launched by Senate President Don Perata never gained much steam and just about fell flat in recent weeks when Denham’s adversary dropped the campaign.

In San Benito County, more than 70 percent of voters said “no” to the recall question, while former Assemblyman and current Monterey County Supervisor Simon Salinas gained the most votes among those who preferred the recall, with 86.7 percent of the vote, according to the latest, unofficial results here.
