Around the Water Cooler

Question of the week: Do you believe the U.S. economy has improved in the past year? The vote was split 3-3.

Ruth Erickson: “No, the economy has not improved, even though the federal government says it has. Many companies have closed, cut back or outsourced causing thousands to lose their jobs. The increase in employment is just temporary due to the holidays. Gas prices may be down but the cost of living has increased. We can only hope that the economy will improve in the near future.”

Mary Zanger: “No. Just look at Hollister and see the many empty retail/office spaces for lease. See the crowds of people lined up at the Community Food Bank. See the thrift stores bustling with people. Hollister and all the communities need jobs for its people. If the private sector does not provide jobs then the public sector must. We need to invest in new roads, highways, bridges, water systems, and sewer systems. We need to invest in wind machines and solar panels like Germany and China. We need to build a grid to electrify the country with renewable energy. Then plenty of jobs for everyone will exist. People will have money to spend on each other, making the economy grow which allows the government to rake in the taxes and stop obsessing about the ‘financial cliff’.”

Nants Foley: “I think so. If you don’t agree, try to find a parking spot at a mall! (just kidding…buy local). Indicators such as corporate spending and housing starts indicate economic recovery is taking place.”

Richard Place: “No I don’t. I believe they misspelled fiscal. It’s really the Physic Cliff and both Parties are pushing stuff over it, and we’re at the bottom of the pile.”

Louise Ledesma: “Absolutely Yes! The unemployment rate is down, the prices of homes are on the upswing and people seem to have a more positive, hopeful attitude. New business have opened here in Hollister and even gas prices are down so people can spend more on Christmas.”

Frankie Gallagher: “I think the economy is definitely improving. New homes are being built here in Hollister, some of the local merchants I’ve spoken with have said sales are better than previous years, gas prices have come down, and I think people are finally feeling hopeful about the future.”
