The San Benito County Water District Board had an overall attendance record of 88.3 percent over the last year, according to meeting agendas from Oct. 24 of last year to Oct. 29 of this year.

Over that time period, the board of directors held 12 meetings with a total of seven absences among the five directors. Director Frank Bettencourt said vacations, illness and other activities are common reasons for absence.

“I think we have good attendance, but we have different directors that have businesses, and sometimes things come up.”

Of the seven total absences, four of them belonged to Director Sonny Flores. He told the Free Lance they were due to a medical issue. He also noted that his attendance in the prior year had been much better.

Directors Bettencourt and John Tobias had perfect attendance for the meetings, while Bob Swanson missed one and Ken Perry missed two. Bettencourt stressed the importance of doing the best to represent constituents.

“It’s a very important thing,” he said. “You become elected as a director and you should make all the meetings possible.”

For the same period, the San Benito County Water District Board of Directors had 9 special meetings. The board had an attendance rate of 89 percent for those meetings.

The meetings are held in the evening at different times than the normal meetings. During that span, Perry missed three meetings and Flores and Swanson each missed on meeting. Tobias and Bettencourt, again, attended all the special meetings.
