free home check-up to help conserve water.
The San Benito County Water District is again promoting May as Water Awareness Month and encouraging residents to participate in a free home check-up to help conserve water.
“We have a couple things we’re striving for,” said Eva Schmoock, SBCWD water conversation specialist. “First, we want to encourage people to save water at home by scheduling a leak check and sprinkler evaluation.”
Depending on the house, the water district will give away water-saving devices, and people who sign up during May and June will be entered in a drawing for a high-efficiency clothes washer. The water district also hopes to give away low-flow toilets beginning in early June.
“Last year we gave out over 900 toilets,” Schmoock said. “We’d like to beat that.”
Some restrictions apply to the eligibility for a free toilet. The toilets being replaced must have been made before 1991 and the homes must be connected to a municipal water system such as Sunnyslope Water District or the Hollister or San Juan Bautista water systems. An old toilet must be returned to the water district, and new ones must be installed within 45 days, Schmoock said.
Free water checks will be taking place all summer long, and not just for homeowners. Schmoock said businesses are also invited to participate in the program.
“We’re asking people to use water wisely and not waste it because it is hard to clean and run it through the system,” Schmoock said.
