SAN LUIS RESERVOIR

Addressing thousands of farmworkers and farm owners at San Luis Reservoir, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said the world’s attention was focused on the California Latino Water Coalition over its four-day march that culminated at the state park just outside San Benito County. The group was marching to raise awareness of the drought conditions and water-related needs in California in light of a zero allocation this year from the federal government’s supply. Critics have contended the cutback will lead to thousands of job losses.

With a common refrain of “We need water,” Schwarzenegger spoke to the importance of the issue for California.

“Right here today, you have the world’s attention. Right here today, we’re putting a spotlight on this very important issue. We are here today and together we say, ‘We need water,'” he said. “It is about jobs. It is about our schools, our families. It is about the entire economy of the Central Valley. It is about the entire economy of the State of California. This is why we need water.”

The rally also featured a variety of speakers including Democratic Assemblywoman Anna Caballero, who represents San Benito County; CLWC Chairman and actor/comedian Paul Rodriguez, several farm owners and a farm laborer.

The governor praised the diverse audience for being in attendance pointing out that there were “many farmers and farm workers, mayors and students, business owners, civil leaders, politicians, everyone is coming together here today.”

He also said that he hears the concerns that were raised from this march and he will not quit on it.

The coalition’s march began in Mendota, 38 miles west of Fresno, and culminated at the San Luis Reservoir after covering 50 miles in four days.
