Call the press, Red Phone’s back on this Wednesday morning with answers to its faithful callers. Got a gripe, comment or question? Call the Red Phone, always listening, always online, always available at 635-9219.

Flushed over toilets

Red Phone’s first caller was grossed out by a lack of toilet seat covers at the Hollister Target store.

“I’m calling in regards to toilet seat covers,” she said. “I was wondering what the state or local city ordinance is. I was in Target and they have no toilet seat covers. I brought it to their attention and they said that corporate headquarters canceled that and it’s up to each and every individual store. I think that’s disgusting and so I didn’t know if it is something statewide that requires it or if it is the county and what can be done.”

Well, Red Phone is happy to report when the Hollister Target was called about the lack of covers, on-duty manager Carmen said the store had new seat covers scheduled for installation this morning. She said the seat covers had been on order as part of the remodeling project.

“They’ll be installed tomorrow,” she told Red Phone. “We’re undergoing a remodel and they we’re on order. So by tomorrow they will be installed.”

A little different tale than our caller was told. Red Phone called Target’s corporate media relations office, but a spokesperson did not know Target’s toilet policy. She said she would check but could not get back to Red Phone by deadline. When she does, Red Phone will let you know.

As for any law requiring the seat covers, San Benito County Director of Environmental Health Bob Shingai said he doesn’t think it is a requirement for businesses to provide covers for their potties.

“To the best of my knowledge, no,” he said. “I think a lot of that is a courtesy that people take for granted.”

SBC Environmental Health Specialist Darryl Wong said he knows of no law to provide the seat covers, but did have a suggestion. “I would say do what mom always told me ‘use a lot of toilet paper to line the seat,'” he said.

These streets aren’t made for walking

Another Red Phone caller dialed up the Crimson Crusader to comment on the sidewalk work that has the walkways of San Benito Street in tatters.

“I understand that the sidewalk work in downtown is a necessary evil to improve the area but when the sidewalks are torn up, there needs to be another place for people to walk,” he said. “One day last week both sides of the street were totally destroyed with boards leading into businesses and no where to walk. I walk to work and it’s ridiculous that I have to walk in the street or cross San Benito Street several times, without crosswalks, to avoid the construction. I think it either could have been planned or executed better. I know it will be a welcome change when the sidewalks are completed, but it’s pretty horrible in the meantime.”
