Human Weed Whackers
With summer gone, it is time to do a little fall cleaning, and our citizen weed watchers are keeping an eye on things for us.
As we reported previously, the city now has two full-time weed whackers out there taming the out-of-control vegetation.
Two callers let us know about ongoing weed problems, and that gave us a chance to check up on the progress of the weed abatement effort.
Caller number one asked about the weeds across the street from Ladd Lane school on Southside Road. That area has been a persistent problem for some time.
The good folks at public works tell us that the problem is on their radar, and that the weed patrol is scheduled to be in the area in two to three weeks. If they’re not, be sure to give us a call.
Caller number two asked about weeds on East Park, which it turns out is an orchard behind a fence. Being private property, the city won’t be cutting the offending growth itself, but the city promised us that code enforcement officer Mike Chambless would take a look ASAP and have a talk with the property owner. The threat of a citation might be all that’s needed.
One Flu Over the
Cuckoo’s Nest
Another thing autumn brings us, besides the change of leaves, pumpkins and cooler days, is that perennial favorite – influenza. The change of climate and hustle and bustle of school days are often all that’s needed to weaken your immune system and keep you on the couch for a few days.
One reader called the Red Phone with an excellent question: Where on earth does one go to get a flu shot in town, and when?
Naturally, the first place we thought to call was the county Health Department: If anyone could direct our dear readers to a flu shot, it would be the guys in charge of the health of the whole county. So we called. And called. And called again. And while we definitely enjoyed making small talk with a very friendly receptionist, we’re a little bummed out that we
couldn’t get a hold of one public servant able to get around to digging up the list of local flu shot clinics. Maybe you will have better luck with them: 637-5367.
However, may it never be said that Red Phone let its readers down. We did a little of our own research, and we’ve put together a list, admittedly incomplete, of local flu shot clinics:
Nob Hill Foods will be giving flu shots on Tuesdays and Fridays starting Oct. 21 until Nov. 18, from 9am to 1pm, as well as by appointment.
Albertsons can help you out today from 10am to 2pm, as well as Nov. 16 at the same time, and also by appointment. Pinnacle Health Care is fresh out of flu shots right now, but should be ready to go again by early next week.
Not sure if a flu shot is right for you? According to Nob Hill pharmacist Tom Wong, flu shots are “crucial” for anyone over 65 years of age, and a darn good idea for young children as well. For most older kids and adults though you’ll probably be fine battling it out with some Theraflu, especially if you’re still scared of needles (like us).
Call the Red Phone with problems at 625-9219 – but we probably won’t make that late night Nyquil run for you.
