Our first Red Phone caller, a Hollister man, asked the Crimson Crusader how and where he could play horseshoes in San Benito County. Good question, dearest caller.

The horseshoe pits at Dunne Park were removed about 15 years ago because officials deemed them too close to the playground. Hollister Parks Supervisor Marcello Orta said the horseshoe pits also attracted a bad element to the park – namely alcohol consumption.

Although there are no longer horseshoe pits at Dunne Park, there are pits at Veterans Memorial Park. To get more information on how to get access to these pits, the Crimson Crusader made a call over to San Benito County Public Works staffer Cindy Cecena. She told our hero that locals can only use the horseshoe pits at Veterans Memorial Park if they rent a shelter. In order to rent a shelter for the day, one must call county Public Works at 831-636-4170 and make a reservation. Reservations require a $50 deposit and a $50 rental fee and can be made up to seven days in advance.

Attention: Road closure

Our next Red Phone matter was faxed to our hero by Caltrans Public Information Officer Donna Carter. She told our hero that the intersection of Airline Highway and Union Road will be closed from 11am to noon today for the Santa Clara Valley Peace Officers Memorial Run.

Will Construction Affect Local Drivers?

Our next Red Phone caller, a Hollister woman, asked the Crimson Crusader to find out more about the coming closure of Cienega Road and how that will affect the residents of Montebello Estates.

The Crimson Crusader called Arman Nazemi at the San Benito County Public Works Department to find the answer to this important question. Nazemi had good news for you, dearest caller. The construction project will not interfere with driving to and from Montebello Estates.

The $948,625 project will close a portion of Cienega Road south of Limekiln Road to replace the existing one-lane bridge with a two-lane bridge. Traffic north of bridge will not be affected, Nazemi said. However, traffic south of the bridge will be diverted. Thousand Trials traffic will be affected, he said. Motorists will be diverted to Highway 25 and then to Cienega to get around the closed-road construction project.
