Our first Red Phone caller of the week asked the Crimson Crusader what could be done to get a four-way stop sign installed at the intersection of Westside Boulevard and Central Avenue. The caller said he has seen “way too many” accidents and “way too many” speeders near the intersection.
The Crimson Crusader, a longtime advocate of transportation and road safety, called David Rubcic, an associate civil engineer with the City of Hollister to find out what could be done. Rubcic said questions and concerns about traffic control devices such as stop signs should be directed to Hollister’s Engineering Department. Rubcic encouraged our Red Phone caller to drop him a line at (831) 636-4340, but said that stop signs are generally not used as speed control devices.
Seeking Pumpkins
Our next Red Phone caller, wondering if she had been missing an important Halloween tradition, asked the Crimson Crusader if Pride of San Juan would have a pumpkin patch this year on Union Road.
The Crimson Crusader walked across the street to Pride of San Juan’s office building at 375 Sixth St. in Hollister to get the skinny on this year’s pumpkin patch plans. Supervisor Gary Shingai said the pumpkin patch is already open for business at the same location as always. He invited locals to stop by at any time to pick up a pumpkin from the patch.
“It’s on the honor system,” Shingai said. “If you bring a flashlight, you can even go out there at night.”
welcome to Town
The next Red Phone caller came from a compassionate and caring landlord looking to welcome his new tenants to Hollister. He asked the Crimson Crusader if any local groups or organizations provide welcome baskets to new residents. Uninsured Menaces
Our final Red Phone caller of the week, frustrated after her car was damaged in an accident with an unlicensed and uninsured driver, asked the Crimson Crusader why she had to go to the Hollister Police Department to press charges against the driver.
The Crimson Crusader made a quick call to Capt. Bob Brooks at the Hollister Police Department to get the answer. Brooks said our Red Phone caller’s frustration may have been the result of some miscommunication. He vowed to get to the bottom of the case and help our caller out.
