The San Jose Choral Project returns to San Benito County for the second consecutive year, in a concert Sunday, Dec. 10, that includes the world premiere of a major new work.

“The Songbird and the Eagle,” based on a traditional Buddhist tale, explores the theme of the possibility of world peace attained through the small actions of individuals.

The program also features “Dona nobis pacem” by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The concert, called “Winter’s Gifts: Peace,” makes only one local appearance, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Benedict’s Church, 1200 Fairview Road. Tickets are available at Running Rooster and The Pinnacle in downtown Hollister or online at www.choralproject.org. Cost is $30 for adults, $20 for students and seniors and children under 10 are admitted free of charge.

The Choral Project will appear with the San Jose Chamber Orchestra. Performances also are planned for Chateau Julien Wine Estate in Carmel and in San Jose.

The Choral Project is a vocal ensemble founded by artistic director Daniel Hughes in 1996. The 45-voice ensemble has performed throughout the Northern California area at concerts, interfaith services and choral festivals and invitationals.

In July 2004, the Choral Project took second place in the mixed choir competition at the 58th annual International Eisteddfod in Wales, scoring 274 of a possible 300 points and trailing the winning ensemble by only one point.

The project has frequently recorded. This year, the group released two CDs on the Clarion label – “Winter,” featuring the first commercial recording of Eric Witacre’s composition of the same name, and “One is the All,” a recording that accompanied a June production of the same name. That work featured the world premiere of “Keramos,” a new work by Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz.
