That’s the setting for San Benito Stage Company’s “Flapper!”, a musical comedy farce that continues through this weekend at the Granada Theater on Fifth Street in downtown Hollister.
The youth production features a cast of more than two dozen of San Benito County’s best young actors, directed by Sally Hail and produced by Kathy Alvarez.
The plot is simple enough. Polly Pepper, played by Jessica Frey, is about to turn 18, when she is to receive a priceless diamond necklace that’s not been displayed in public for 40 years.
Of course that attracts attention – wanted and unwanted. As the event attracts the attention of newspaper hawkers and radio gossip mongers, it also attracts the attention of some people who would like to relieve the debutante of her million dollar burden. At the same time, swindlers are plotting to relieve Miss Pepper’s wealthy aunt of her bank account.
Throw in a wealthy Texas playboy, a jealous rival, several complications and a string of production musical numbers and the curtain rises on “Flapper!”
It’s no surprise that at the end, everyone lives happily ever after, except for the bad guys.
Tickets are still available at the door. Performances are at 7:30 Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are also available at West Coast Dance FX and Post Net. Further information is available by calling 524-6667.
