Legislation by Senator Jeff Denham, R-Merced, which would designate the flyover at the interchange of State Highway Routes 152 and 156 as the “Joseph A. Zanger Memorial Flyover,” was approved unanimously by both the Senate and Assembly, according to Denham’s office.

“Joe Zanger was a strong and effective leader for increased highway safety and transportation improvements that have helped save the lives of countless motorists,” said Denham in a statement. “The Zanger family’s Casa De Fruta business is a renowned destination for those traveling along the Pacheco Pass on Highway 152. Naming the flyover after Joe is a very appropriate tribute.”

Denham’s resolution requests that the California Department of Transportation determine the cost of signs and install those signs after receiving donations from non-state sources to cover the cost.

Casa de Fruta began as a small cherry stand built in 1943 and grew to include a large fruit stand, a restaurant, a park for recreational vehicles, a lodge, wine tasting, a gift shop, a barnyard zoo, a candy store, a service station, and a dried fruit mail order business.
