The San Benito football team, despite compiling a 1-5 record in the Tri-County Athletic League, had six players earn all-league honors last week, including three first team selections.

Junior linebacker Michael Murphy and senior defensive linemen Sam Doty and Robby Sanchez were each chosen first team defense in the TCAL this year.

The ‘Balers had three second team selections as well, including senior defensive back Devin Quintana, junior defensive back Alex Alvarez and senior wide receiver Evan McFadden.

McFadden led the ‘Balers with 29 receptions for 463 yards, which was fourth in the league.

TCAL MVP was awarded to RB Mark Ramos of North Salinas (149 att., 1,242 yards); Offensive MVPs went to QBs David Fales of Palma (117 of 166, 1,864 yards, 19 TD, 3 INT) and Jamie Jensen of Gilroy (184 of 286, 2,902 yards, 28 TD, 13 INT); North Salinas outside linebacker Chris Santana was selected as Defensive MVP; Tony Zamora of North Salinas was chosen as Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman; and Most Outstanding Defensive Lineman was given to Palma’s Paul Marcroft.

Gilroy’s Dante Fullard (70 rec., 1,200 yards, 14 TD) and Palma’s Bret Chernetsky (48 rec., 853 yards, 13 TD) were named the TCALs Athletes of the Year.

Juniors of the Year were Salinas running back Alvin Jelks and Palman defensive back Bruce Taylor.

Sophomores of the Year were defensive lineman Andy Ruvalcaba of Alisal and Alvarez defensive lineman Anthony McKay.
