Through the season’s first 14 games for the Arizona State baseball team – which is 10-4 – former San Benito starter Darin Gillies has made an immediate impact.

In four appearances – including two starts – Gillies has gone 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA. Gillies has thrown 10.1 innings, allowing five hits and five earned runs.

In that time, Gillies has struck out 14 batters but allowed six walks. He has allowed only one extra-base hit in 35 at-bats.

Gillies appeared out of the bullpen Saturday in a 7-3 loss to Long Beach State.

In one inning, Gillies allowed two hits and two runs. He struck out two batters and walked one. Gillies entered the contest with the Sun Devils trailing 4-0.

Brian Haggett, Ronnie Fhurong

Through 22 games, former Baler Brian Haggett has carried Cal State Monterey Bay in the early season.

Starting 20 of the team’s 22 games, Haggett is batting .372 with one home run and 12 RBIs. He has scored 10 runs and hit two doubles and a triple.

Teammate, and former Baler, Ronnie Fhurong went into a hitting slump over the past week of game.

In 14 starts, Fhurong is batting .190 with four RBIs, two triples and a double.

The Otters travel to Chico State on Friday for a three-game series in Northern California. The Otters are 13-9 overall.

J.C. Clayton

The BYU junior and former San Benito softball player, J.C. Clayton has continued the good start to her year.

Clayton is hitting .302 with 2 RBIs in BYU’s first 20 games. Clayton has started 19 games for the Cougars, who are off to a 13-7 record.

Clayton has seven multiple-hit games this year, but has only two hits in her last four starts.

After two weeks off, the Cougars return to action March 15 against Purdue and Arizona State at the Judi Garman Classic at Cal State Fullerton.

Marissa Ibarra

Pitching on back-to-back days March 9 and March 10, Marissa Ibarra had two very different results.

In the opener of a three-game set with Grand Canyon, the San Francisco State pitcher dominated, shutting out Grand Canyon in seven innings.

Ibarra allowed four hits and struck out six in the Gators’ 3-0 win. The next day, though, Ibarra struggled.

In seven innings, Ibarra allowed eight hits and seven runs – only three earned – in a 7-0 loss to Grand Canyon.

Overall this year, Ibarra has gone 4-6 in 13 appearances, including 11 starts. She has pitched seven complete games and as struck out 54 in 72 innings pitched.

She is the only Gators’ pitcher with more than one win. That Gators have struggled to a 6-18 record so far this year.

The Gators host Cal Baptist at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Vanessa Farias

Westmont College junior Vanessa Farias – and former Baler – helped lead her basketball team to a 29-3 record and a No. 1 seed in the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship, which starts Thursday.

Farias in 15 starts, averaged nearly 20 minutes per game and was fifth on the team with 7.2 points per game.

Westmont opens the tournament Thursday against Lyon of Arkansas (20-11) at Frankfort, Kentucky. The game starts at 9:30 a.m.

If Westmont wins, it advances to Friday’s round-two game.

The national championship game will be hosted on March 20 at 3 p.m.
