After missing out on the playoffs by only a few games, the San Benito girls soccer team was rewarded with five postseason awards on Monday.
Victoria Perez, Marissa Adame and Mikayla Irvin were named to the Tri-County Athletic League’s first team. Freshman Chace Miguel and Karly Leon were named to the second-team All-TCAL.
Irvin was also named the sophomore MVP. Perez was named junior co-MVP with Gilroy’s Margarita Trigo-Rocha.
San Benito finished the season with a 11-5-4 overall record, including a 8-2-2 record in the TCAL.
SBHS boys soccer
Despite a losing season, the boys soccer team was rewarded with four all-league selections on Monday.
Senior Kenneth Hastings and junior striker Ricardo Roque were named to the All-TCAL first team. Junior midfielder Andres Corona and sophomore defender Travis Selski were named to the second team All-TCAL.
Hastings was also named to the senior player of the year for the TCAL.
SBHS baseball
The baseball team evened up its record at 2-2 with a dominant 8-0 win over Monterey on Saturday. San Benito starter Anthony Ocampo threw six scoreless innings in the Baler win.
San Benito struck for five runs in the third inning to break open the game. The Balers added three more an inning later.
In the third, San Benito started the scoring after a walk by Ryan Jacob and a hit by Josh George to begin the inning. Marcus Sabatte knocked in the pair of runs on a double.
In his first game back on the varsity team after the basketball season, Jacob Tonascia recorded a couple of hits and 2 RBIs. Michael Breen also added a pair of walks in his return.
“They solidify the lineup offensively and they give a some varsity experience,” head coach Billy Aviles said. “They are definitely leaders on our team.”
San Benito opens the league season Tuesday against Gilroy at San Benito High. First pitch is expected at 3:30 p.m.
SBHS volleyball
After being swept by Gilroy High School in the season’s first league match, San Benito entered Saturday’s Campbell Varsity Classic at Leigh High School with tempered expectations.
But in San Jose, the Balers stunned the field of 12 teams and finished in second place.
San Benito swept its pool play with wins of Branham High in three games, Serra in two games and Lynbrook in two games.
The victories sent the Balers to the tournament’s winner’s bracket and semifinal game. There, the Balers faced host Leigh High.
San Benito won in two games to reach the championship match.
In the championship match, San Benito fell to Valley Christian in three games. In the final game, San Benito lost 15-13.
“It was brutal,” head coach Sam Klauer said. “We should have won. We played good.”
She continued: “I’m really proud of the team. We played really well. Hopefully, we can capitalize off of this.”
SBHS tennis
In its only match of the year so far, the boys tennis team lost to Monterey 4-3 on Feb. 28. Matches scheduled on Feb. 29 and March 1 were canceled because of rain.
The Balers’ Kyle Skinner won the only singles match, as the rest of the team lost in straight sets.
Double teams of Aaron Francis and Nick Trujillo and Jacob Panger and Sonny Singh each won their matches in straight sets.
The Balers travel to Monte Vista Christian on Tuesday.
