Behind 12 kills from Isaiah Acfalle and Carlos Gutierrez, the San Benito boys volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Gonzales in Hollister on Tuesday.
San Benito jumped on the Spartans early, running out to a 9-1 lead in the first game.
Thanks to assist-leader David Hawks, who had 17 assists, San Benito never trailed in the opening game, eventually winning 25-13.
The second game, though, was a bit of a struggle for the Balers.
The undermanned Balers ¬– three players were out of town – tested a new lineup throughout the three games, and at times seemed rusty.
Because of three straight unforced errors, San Benito fell behind 0-3 to open the second game. The Balers struggled to regain control of the game and didn’t grab their first lead until it was 18-17. But once the Balers grabbed the lead, they never looked back.
San Benito took control of the game thanks to four-straight kills from Acfalle and won 25-18.
San Benito used that momentum to blow away Gonzales in the final game, winning 25-11.
“This was important for us because we testing out a new rotation for Thursday,” Acfalle said. “We showed that we have a lot of guys that can do some good things.”
The match was a tune up for the Balers before Thursday re-match with Gilroy High. An early season loss to the Mustangs is the Balers only defeat of the Tri-County Athletic season.
The match starts at 6:30 p.m.
