In a Mission Trail Athletic League cross-country meet Thursday, a strong run by Diego Leon helped Anzar finished in fourth place out 13 teams at Toro Park in Salinas.

Leon finished in fifth place with a time of 17:13 – less than 30 seconds slower than Stevenson’s Alex Farmer. Leon’s teammate Nat Hsia-Caron placed 10th with a time of 17:42 to give the Hawks two top-10 finishers.

The Hawks finished in fourth place behind first-place King City, Pacific Grove and Carmel.

Christian Monroy (17:58) finished in 17th place for Anzar. Diego Avila (18:26) and Alex Samuels (20:40) gave Anzar a strong top-5 runners.

On the girls side, Ali Bautista (24:04) and Adriana Vasquez (24:08) finished 27th and 28th to help Anzar earn a seventh-place finish among 10 squads.

Carly Zako (24:39) finished in 34th place and Yvette Felix took 49th place with a time of 26:09.

SBHS Tennis

The San Benito girls tennis team improved to 6-2 inside the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division on Thursday, beating Alisal 4-3 at the Ridgemark Tennis Center.

Audrey Marshall started the victory for San Benito with a three-set victory over Alisal’s No. 1 tennis player. Marshall won 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.

No. 2 players Ally Triolo was also victorious, winning 7-6, 6-3. Kelsey Slavich gave the Balers three singles wins with a 6-7, 6-2, 10-8 come-from-behind victory.

No. 1 doubles players Cathy Frusetta and Berenice Bribiesca stayed undefeated in league play with a a 7-6, 6-1 win.

The Balers travel to Notre Dame and Salinas High this week to end their regular season.

SBHS Volleyball

The Balers continued to stay in control of second place inside the MBL’s Gabilan Division on Thursday, dominating Watsonville in an easy 3-0 victory.

The Balers controlled the match’s tempo from the beginning winning 25-18, 25-15, 25-23 on the road.

Ellie Burley finished with a game-high 24 kills. Erica Chapa followed with 14 kills as well.

Marissa Espino finished with 29 assists and Raelynn Heredia contributed 48 digs. The Balers defense was stellar throughout the match, finishing with 156 digs.

The Balers host North Salinas at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

SBHS girls water polo

After losing the opening game of last weekend’s tournament at Davis High School, the San Benito girls water polo team finished with victories over Napa High and Lodi High.

With the 2-1 record at the Davis tournament, San Benito improved to 9-6 overall with only two more games left in league play.

The Balers opened the tournament with a 12-8 loss to Bella Vista. Afterward, though, the San Benito defense led by goalie Rachel Smithee improved.

SBHS beat Napa High 12-5 and Lodi 9-8 to finish with two victories.

The Balers’ season continues Tuesday against Carmel and Thursday against Salinas. San Benito finishes the week with a tournament in Lincoln on Friday and Saturday.
