Despite a scoreless first half, the San Benito boys’ soccer team pocketed a pair of goals in the final 40 minutes and picked up its first win in Tri-County Athletic League action on Monday when it shutout host Palma 2-0 in Salinas.

Francisco Palomino deposited both scores for the Balers, who improve to 1-2-1 in the TCAL, 7-2-2 overall.

It is San Benito’s first win since a Jan. 4 contest against Carmel. The Balers have had a string of ties and losses since their game against the Padres to open the new year, and have been held to just one goal in each of their last three games.

It was a scoreless first half on Monday, too, even though San Benito outshot Palma 8-2 in the game.

But off an assist by Jose Santoyo, Palomino finally pushed San Benito ahead in the 65th minute, then tacked on a second score in the 73rd minute off an assist by Ivan Martinez.

Keeper Manuel Garcia made two saves in the win.

Although Palma falls to 0-4-0 in the TCAL, 1-8-1 overall, it is San Benito’s first win against the Chieftains since Dec. 11, 2007.

The Balers will look to extend their streak on Wednesday when they will visit Alisal at 5:15 p.m.
