GILROY

Competition at the 31st annual Mid-Cal Wrestling Classic kicks off today, Friday, culminating with the final 14 matches under the spotlight Saturday night inside Bob Hagen Memorial Gymnasium at Gilroy High School.

This year, 71 teams from around California — and one from Reno, Nev. — are entered into the wrestling marathon, including the No. 3-ranked team in the state, Selma, and the No. 5-ranked Gilroy Mustangs.

Gilroy has finished runner-up in the previous two Mid-Cals (behind Vacaville in 2010, Selma in 2009), those coming after three straight tournament championships.

The San Benito Haybalers, meanwhile, will bring 13 wrestlers to the mat on Friday and Saturday, including Tony Gatto (105), Kenny Salcedo (114), Robb Rodriguez (121), Toby Sherman (127), Dominic Cortes (132), Zack Rodriguez (137), Mikey Soto (142), Greg Landry (147), Nick Mendizabal (154), Luis Ruiz (162), Tim Castillo (173), Jorge Perez (191) and Aaron Silva (217).

Four of those Balers enter Mid-Cals as seeded wrestlers. Salcedo earned the No. 6 ranking, at 114 pounds, Zack Rodriguez garnered the No. 5 seed at 137 pounds, Soto is the No. 3 seed at 142 pounds, and Silva is the No. 3 seed in the heavyweight class.

Check back for updates throughout the tournament.
