The shorthanded Anzar boys’ soccer team was unable to even its record at .500 in the Mission Trail Athletic League on Tuesday when it fell by a 5-1 margin to host Greenfield.

The Hawks are now 3-5 in the MTAL, 4-7 overall.

Anzar head coach Carlos Vargas said his team, which has battled numbers issues all season, was without its starting keeper due to illness for Tuesday’s game, leaving the Hawks with just 10 players on the field.

The 10-on-11 scenario forced Vargas to run a 4-4-1 formation, and Greenfield took advantage, jumping out to a two-goal lead by halftime.

It was 3-0 in the second half when the Hawks managed to get on the scoreboard. Off an assist by Ivan Mejia in the 55th minute, Anzar’s Alejandro Jara made it a 3-1 game. But the Bruins would later tack on two more scores en route to the four-goal victory.

Still, Vargas said backup goalie Aaron Hsia-Coron delivered an impressive performance in net for the Hawks, making seven saves.

Anzar will look to not only return to full strength, but also to the win column on Thursday when it will host Pacific Collegiate at 4 p.m.
