The San Benito Stage Company hosted its own local version of the Tony Awards Jan. 29, with a reception and ceremony that honored the best actors, directors and producers from the 2010 season.
“We’ve been doing it since the beginning of the Stage Company, or by the second year,” said Amelia Souza-Hatcher, the president of the SBSC board of directors. “It’s grown in size and now it’s more of a show. We do a little entertainment and try to get the community to come.”
The ceremony doubles to honor the work of those on stage as well as volunteers and sponsors who have supported the stage company through the years.
“We had members from the Community Foundation (for San Benito County) and the (San Benito) Arts Council,” Souza-Hatcher said, of the Saturday event.
She estimated that 250 people were in attendance. The ceremony takes nearly two months to plan, and starts with putting out a ballot to members and sponsors.
“We have a consistent list of categories,” Souza-Hatcher said. “In our own small way, it mimics the Tonys and the Oscars in the types of categories we have.”
The evening is also a chance to introduce new board members and announce the line up for the coming season, which includes the children’s show “Charlotte’s Web,” set for the spring and “The Music Man” this summer. Souza-Hatcher alluded to a surprising fall teen show, but said she couldn’t reveal what it would be yet.
Souza-Hatcher’s said her favorite part of the event is seeing the cast members reconnect.
“It’s a reunion,” she said. “It’s almost like a cast family. We call our cast families. It’s a reunion of some of the people doing the show in January who may not be able to see each other all year.”
She said with the kids, they often jump up and down when they see cast mates who attend different schools.
“That is a blast to watch,” she said.
On the stage, vignettes of different set pieces and costumes were on display from all the shows. They show a video montage of live clips to the audience as well, to remind them of all the plays they performed.
Souza-Hatcher estimated that more than 75 trophies were handed out and said there were plenty of ties.
The event is also a chance to honor sponsors, and this year they handed out a 10-year plaque to San Benito Pediatrics, which has been a sponsor nearly since San Benito County Stage Company was founded 11 years ago.
“Since the sponsorship began, they have been loyal supporters every year,” Souza-Hatcher said.
