Trailing by two goals at halftime, the Anzar boys’ soccer team nearly mounted a comeback against visiting Pacific Collegiate on Thursday, but were unable to make up the difference late as the Pumas outlasted the Hawks by a 4-2 margin.

Pacific Collegiate took a 2-0 lead at the break after depositing scores in the 16th and 25th minutes. Anzar cut the deficit in half in the 45th minute — just five minutes into the second half — when Ivan Mejia set up a goal by Eduardo Campos to make it 2-1.

But PCS made it 3-1 in the 50th minute to reclaim its two-goal cushion. Anzar had a chance to respond just eight minutes later, but Mejia missed a penalty kick in the 58th minute.

Mejia still got a goal in the 65th minute, though, off an assist by Andres Munoz to make it a one-goal deficit, but the Hawks were unable to find the equalizer late.

“And we had our chances,” Anzar head coach Carlos Vargas said.

The Pumas tacked on an insurance goal at the tail end of the game to drop the Hawks, who fall to 3-6 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, 4-8 overall.
