San Benito High School students presented a check for $771 for the Hope For a Cure Memorial Scholarship fund Jan. 20 – money raised at the school from a Pink Out Day last October that raised awareness of breast cancer.

Mary Andrade created the Hope For a Cure Memorial Educational Scholarship to help students and high school graduates who have lost a member or relative to cancer. Breast cancer is one of the leading health problems in women today. There are many government and nonprofit organizations dedicated to research and finding a cure for the disease.

Andrade came to San Benito high School asking for them to help raise money for the organization two years ago. The Pink Out Day created to help raise money has been transformed into a class competition, where students, faculty and staff wore pink clothes. Freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors all compete to see who can raise the most money for the organization. This year’s Pink Out Day consisted of bake sales, change collections and selling pink bands supporting breast cancer awareness.

Juan Robledo, the activities director at SBHS, explained that this year the school “went beyond her (Andrade’s) expectations.”

One student who helped with the event said that the idea of helping out students from her school and people in her community makes her feel “proud to be a Baler.” Some students involved in the high school’s ASB agreed that if they have the chance to help out with this organization again this year they believed they would be able to raise more money for the organization.

The Hope for a Cure Memorial Education Scholarship is open to students and high school graduates who have lost parents, guardians or grandparents due to cancer, and who reside in San Benito County, wishing to pursue a higher education as a full-time student. Hope for a Cure was created in memory of Juli-Rowe O’Connor, Karen Flaherty and Rose Arnerich.
