Although it beat Kirby by a narrow 38-33 margin on Jan. 13 — and behind just three different scorers — the Anzar boys’ basketball team opened up the offense on Tuesday and cruised past the visiting Santa Cruz school by a far more comfortable 54-26 score in Coastal Athletic League play.

Anzar had six different players make the box score this time around, with three of them earning double-digit point totals, as Jesse Ramirez, Andres Gomez and Nick Salgado combined for 42 points.

Salgado led all scorers in the game with 19 points, while Gomez and Ramirez followed with 13 points and 10 points, respectively.

“I’ve got to give our kids credit. They’re growing as a team,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said.

The Hawks were unable to pull away from Kirby in their last meeting, leading by just four points at halftime, and by a 31-25 entering the final period. But Tuesday’s matchup saw Anzar jump out to a 13-8 lead after the first quarter and lead 24-16 at the break.

Entering the final period this time, the Hawks led Kirby, 44-22.

Kirby’s Gabe Best scored 14 points.

Anzar is now 6-3 in CAL play, 7-9 overall, and will square off on Thursday against Anchorpoint Christian in Gilroy. Tip-off is 8 p.m.

AHS Girls Basketball

The Anzar girls’ basketball team, behind a team-high 11 points by Shelby Sorensen, defeated visiting Kirby 32-22 on Tuesday night in Coastal Athletic League action.

Delaney McKinney added nine points for the Hawks, who improve to 5-4 in the CAL, 7-14 overall.

Anzar will host KIPP San Jose Collegiate on Friday night in San Juan Bautista.
