As for the team, it compiled a team score of 200 to tie for second place with Carmel. Palma recorded a 191 to finish in first, while Salinas was fourth with a 241.

The tournament took place on the par-36 front nine at Corral.

Although Cross’ strong round led the team, his teammates weren’t far behind. Ryan Han shot a 38, Nathan Winn followed with a 39, Jared Lantis carded a 41, and both Jade Kimura and Aaron Smith rounded out the team with matching scores of 45.

Recording a 200 this early in the season is an impressive mark for San Benito. But it wasn’t the team’s season-low. In fact, Monday’s tournament was the third scheduled match for the Baler boys already this season.

On Feb. 21, San Benito finished fourth out of 14 teams at a tournament at the Salinas Golf and Country Club, while two days later, the Balers earned a 196-221 dual-meet victory over Carmel at Carmel Valley Ranch.

San Benito head coach Chris Branon was unaware of the last time the Balers had defeated Carmel, which is often recognized as one of the top teams in Northern California.

“I know they had a couple of guys still playing basketball,” Branon said of Carmel. “But 196, that’s still pretty good.”

In that match, Han and Winn each led the Balers with matching 37s, while Cross was one stroke behind with a 38. Kimura and Smith each carded a 42 to round out the scoring, while Lantis finished the par-35 front nine with a 47.

San Benito will play its first TCAL Tournament on Wednesday at Laguna Seca.
