Despite leading 2-0 early, the San Benito High baseball team surrendered three runs against Santa Cruz Tuesday and suffered a 3-2 loss in the opening game of the Mike Hazlett Tournament at Santa Clara’s Washington Park.

The Balers (0-2) led 2-0 in the second inning before giving up a pair of runs in the third and another run — the eventual game-winner — in the fifth inning.

San Benito starting pitcher Bryan Granger (4IP, 2BB, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 4K, 1HBP) allowed two runs on two hits in four innings of work. He struck out four, but walked two and hit another batter.

After pitcher Dustin Rovella (2IP, 1BB, 3K) tossed two innings of scoreless relief, Anthony Ocampo (1IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H) came in and gave up one unearned run on one hit.

The Balers had two errors in the game.

San Benito took an early lead in the second inning behind RBI singles from Robert Soto and Daniel Arevalo. Jose Guzman had a pair of hits for San Benito.

Santa Cruz received all its run support off the bat of Collin Ferguson, who had two hits and three RBI in the game.

The Balers will return to Washington Park in Santa Clara on Thursday to take on Santa Clara (2-2).
