Police and sheriff’s authorities Thursday arrested a Watsonville man – who had been wanted for a warrant and on suspicion of several local crimes – after a short vehicle chase in northwest Hollister, according to police.

Police arrested Jose L. Palomino, 26, after noticing a vehicle driven recklessly in the area of Teresita Court and Central Avenue, according to a press release from the Hollister Police Department. An officer tried to stop the vehicle, and Palomino sped away. The suspect eventually ran from the vehicle and tried to hide in a nearby yard.

The suspect was heard jumping over fences, and police surrounded the area. A search determined the suspect was hiding in the back yard of a home on Graf Road. An officer and sheriff’s deputy found the suspect with the help of a sheriff’s office K-9, “Nantos.”

The suspect resisted arrest and received several bites from the dog. He was treated at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital for minor injuries and was booked into the San Benito County Jail, according to police.

Palomino was wanted for several local crimes and had a warrant from Watsonville, where he is believed to be a Norteno gang member.

Recommended charges included burglary, damaging a communications device, failure to yield and resisting arrest.

Warrants included charges of having a concealed weapon in a vehicle, possession of restricted ammunition and driving with a suspended license, according to police.

He also faces charges on suspicion of domestic violence that have been forwarded to the San Benito County District Attorney’s Office.
