Starting pitcher Bryan Granger tossed six innings of one-hit, one-run baseball, striking out eight along the way to pick up the win. Dustin Rovella retired the side in the seventh in his one inning of relief.
The sizable, seven-run victory for the Balers (4-2, 2-0 TCAL) comes just two days after they opened league play with a slightly more comfortable 10-0 win against the Vikings, in a game that called after the sixth inning.
That game was only 1-0 San Benito through four and a half complete innings, though.
Thursday’s match started similarly with two scoreless innings. But a four-run third frame for the Balers, followed by two more runs in the fourth, supplied San Benito with a 6-0 lead after four complete innings.
San Benito tacked on another two runs in the seventh inning as well, after North High plated its one and only run of the contest in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
Valenzuela and Nick Stephens each contributed multi-hit games — each chiming in with two hits apiece — while Robert Soto, Jacob Tonascia, Michael Breen and Daniel Gonzales each added an RBI.
Stephens also had two runs scored in the game.
Unlike last year, when TCAL teams would have Friday off before a Saturday contest, San Benito will play Friday instead and will travel to Salinas to take on Everett Alvarez. First pitch is 3:30 p.m.
