The San Benito boys’ tennis team lost its 2011 season-opening match to host Carmel 4-3 in non-conference action on Thursday in Pebble Beach.

The Balers lost at No. 1 doubles and three of the four matches in singles to fall to the Padres.

Carmel’s wins at singles came at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4, where Russell Poole defeated Jacob Garcia 6-0, 6-0; Henry Merschel topped Nick Trillo 6-1, 6-1; and Rowan Hyland defeated Alex Reilly 6-1, 6-2.

San Benito’s lone win in singles came at the No. 3 position, where Geoff Muzik beat Austin Robertson 6-7, 6-2 and 11-9 in the third-set tiebreaker.

“That was a huge win for Geoff, for sure,” San Benito tennis coach Chris Yoder said. “That was good for his experience.”

The Balers fared better in the doubles category, although were unable to swipe a win at the No. 1 spot, where Kyle Skinner and Eric Johnson lost to Nick Garofond and Brycen Haas 6-3, 6-2.

Otherwise, San Benito’s No. 2 team of Sunny Singh and Brian Becerra topped Mark Trapen and Colin O’Grady 6-3, 6-3, while the No. 3 pairing of Andrew Panger and Jacob Panger defeated Stefan Robles and Nathan Bomar 7-6, 7-6. No tiebreaker scores were provided.

The Balers (0-1) will be back in action on Tuesday when it will visit Everett Alvarez. Match tims is 4 p.m.
