James Durbin, who has ties to the area, advanced Thursday on “American Idol” to the show’s final nine contestants.

Durbin, 21, spent a lot of time in his teenage years with Hollister’s Ken Crowe, a pro wrestler who had often looked after Durbin and took him to weekend shows in the region. Durbin on Wednesday sang “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” during the week’s Elton John tribute.

Durbin moved on when the results were announced Thursday, while the two singers voted off were Naima Adedapo and Thia Megia.

“American Idol” airs at 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday on Fox.
