SBHS Carnival

San Benito High School will host its annual carnival May 6-8, in the football stadium parking lot, with rides and games. Proceeds from tickets purchased in advance support San Benito High School student activities and athletics. They are available for purchase at the student payment center, inside the lobby of the main administration building. Cash-only prices are $20 for a book of 30 tickets or $20 for an all-day wristband. The carnival runs Friday, from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

MACE event

The Mexican American Committee on Education of San Benito County presents the 41st annual scholarship banquet May 7, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., at San Juan Oaks Country Club. The event features dinner, entertainment, an awards programs and dancing. The guest speaker is David Hayes-Bautista, a professor of medicine and director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the University of California, Los Angeles. Entertainment will be provided by Trio Boricano, Sonido Con Sabor and DJ Sergio Flores. Tickets are $50 per person and are only available through presale. Comedy film festival

San Benito Stage Co. presents a Comedy Film Festival, May 7, at 6 p.m., at the Granada Theater, 336 Fifth St., in Hollister. Tickets are $5 and proceeds will benefit the San Benito Stage Company. The evening will feature three films by student directors, including works by Kevin Thome, Jake Hunter and Jimmy Goudge. Their films are titled “Tiny Moustache,” “Blood, Sweat and Explosions” and “The Space Movie. Tickets are onsale at Postal Graphics or by calling Goudge at 638-0398. Tickets will also be sold at the door.

Saddle Horse Parade applications

This year’s Saddle Horse Parade application are available at the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce office, 650 San Benito St. #130, or on the chamber’s website at sanbenitocountychamber.com. The parade is 6 p.m. June 23.

Recreation Commission hosts workshops and survey

The San Benito County Parks and Recreation Commission is hosting to public meetings to gather input from community members about what they see as priorities for parks such as the river parkway, a regional park, the Veterans Memorial Park and the San Benito County Historical Park. Anyone in the community – youth, seniors or families – is invited to share their opinions on recreational needs.

Meetings are set for May 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and May 7, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the Veterans Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St.

For those who cannot make the meeting, a survey is posted online at www.cosb.us/government/county-departments/parks-recreation/. A paper survey can also be requested.

Comic Book Day

Bill’s Bullpen, in Hollister, is one of thousands of comic book shops in the world that will be celebrating Free Comic Book Day on May 7, at 10 a.m., at 207 Fourth St., in Hollister. National Women’s Health Week

The San Benito Health Foundation will celebrate National Women’s Health Week, which is May 8-14, by offering free services to those who qualify on May 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 351 Felice Dr., in Hollister.

Some of the services offered include annual pap smear, mammograms, physicals, immunization for the flu and Tdap, nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support and sign ups for WIC. Women over 40 may qualify for mammograms, while women ages 18 to 25 may qualify for a free HPV vaccine.

Annual Aromas Garden Tour

The Aromas Hills Artisans will host its annual Aromas Garden Tour May 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased the day of the event at the Aromas Grange, at the corner of Rose and Bardue avenues for $10 per person. The local 4-H members will be at the Grange to sell plants and boxed lunches. Representatives from the Aromas Water District will answer questions and offer a list of water-wise plants. Guests will be given a booklet with a map to the gardens. The 10 participating properties range from cottage gardens to organic vegetables. Each garden will host various Aromas artisans who will have art on display such as etchings, watercolors, jewelry, stained glass and more.

2011 Bike Week

San Benito County will host 2011 Bike Week May 9-15, as an effort to encourage people to ride their bikes. May 12 is Bike to School and Bike to Work Day. Those who bike to school can get a free breakfast from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., at the Briggs lawn, corner of Fourth and San Benito Streets, or at Adam Square, next to San Benito Bank, 330 Tres Pinos Road. Students can enter to win a new bike. Adults 18 and over can register to win an iPod touch during the free breakfast. Bike to Church Day is May 15.

Oriana Goes Pop!

The Oriana Chorale will be singing a variety of pop songs as part of its spring concert. Performances are May 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m., and May 15, at 3 p.m., at the Granada Theatre, 336 Fifth St., in Hollister. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for teens and children under 13 are free. Arts Out Loud

San Benito High School students will have a showcase of student talent May 15, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., in the San Benito High School cafeteria. Some of the pieces on display will include ceramics, paintings, drawings, photography, animation and live music. Awards and a giveaway is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.

Tres Pinos flea market

Tres Pinos Elementary School will hosts its second annual flea market, May 15, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the field at the school. There will be used items as well as vendors selling items such as jewelry, candles and more. Money raised will go to the Tres Pinos School General Fund. Pancake breakfast

The San Juan Fire Department is hosting an annual pancake breakfast May 15, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center, in San Juan. Tickets are $5 for the breakfast, which includes pancakes, bacon and sausage.
