Spring time is known to be a little windy around here. But that doesn’t mean your score should suffer because of it. You must learn how to adapt your game to play when it is windy.

Taking more club when going into the wind is not a simple solution every time. If you would normally hit a 3-iron, but due to the wind, you hit your 5-wood. Is that the correct move when going into the wind? Absolutely not.

If the wind is even a bit above average, the trajectory of the 5-wood will take that ball too high, and you will actually hit the 5-wood much shorter than the 3-iron. The idea is to hit the ball lower into the wind and higher with the wind. So choose the club that achieves this.

To hit a shot low, position the ball back in your stance a little more. This will de-loft the club at impact, and your 6-iron will travel more like a 4-iron. This way it stays under the wind. Expect the ball to stop pretty quickly when it hits the green because the wind will stop the ball, and it will drop like it’s attached to a parachute.

Take less club with the wind as the wind will push it more. Don’t expect the ball to hold on the green. Plan on some bounce and roll.
