Wines produced in San Benito County won four gold medal awards and a local winery took home two bronze medals in the Central Coast Wine Competition.

The competition that boasts itself as “largest wine evaluation event that recognizes wines produced exclusively from vinifera grown on the Central Coast regions of California.” The competition announced its 2011 winners in June.

Among the winners, Kenneth Volk Vineyards won gold or silver in four categories for wines produced in San Benito County. They included the 2008 Cabernet Pfeffer (gold winner), 2008 Mourvedre, 2008 Zinfandel and 2009 Negrette.

Pietra Santa Winery was honored with bronze medals for its 2010 Pinot Grigio and 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon.

There were a total of 604 entries from 149 wineries entered in the competition from Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, San Luis Obispo County, San Benito County and Monterey County.

There were just 44 gold winners among the entries.
