The fire started at about 11:45 a.m. Monday in the 100 block of Westside Boulevard. Hollister Fire Chief Fred Cheshire said it was contained to the bedroom where it started, and investigators believe it was caused by a “young child” playing with a lighter.
Cheshire stressed that smoke detectors saved the lives of the occupants, three adults and two minors.
“It definitely could have been a big deal,” Cheshire said.
Nobody was injured, while there was heavy smoke damage to the one room and its contents, the fire chief said. Someone in the home called 911 after noticing the fire.
The fire department received the first report at 11:48 a.m. and had it controlled by 11:59 a.m., Cheshire said.
