Despite 18 points from Mark Rania, the Anzar boys basketball team couldn’t overcome a 10-point deficit against Anchorpoint Christian on Tuesday night in Gilroy, where the Hawks lost to the Warriors 63-53.
Devon Parish had 12 points for the Hawks, who fall to 2-2 in the Coastal Athletic League and 4-14 overall.
“They had a 10-point lead for most of the game,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said. “We would close the gap and they’d increase it. And then we would close the gap and then they’d increase it again.”
Trailing 17-10 after one quarter, Anzar cut the deficit to just three points at halftime when it outscored the Warriors 18-14 in the second stanza.
The Hawks cut into Anchorpoint’s lead again in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 14-13. But the Gilroy school closed out the game with a 19-11 quarter to seal the victory.
Anchorpoint’s Josh Ignagni led all scorers with 25 points, while teammate Nicholas Coleman chimed in with 19 points. Anzar’s Niko Hebert had 11 points.
The Hawks are back in action on Thursday when they will host York at 7 p.m.
