SALINAS

The San Benito Haybalers lost to host North Salinas 2-1 on Tuesday in Tri-County Athletic League action.

The Balers are now 2-6-1 in the TCAL and 5-10-1 overall.

The Vikings, who were shutout during their previous game against San Benito, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half on Tuesday and never looked back.

Baler Ivan Martinez cut the deficit in half at the 65th minute on an unassisted score, but San Benito was unable to pocket the equalizer in the waning minutes.

The Balers’ best chance perhaps came off the foot of Steven Mercado, whose free kick from just outside the box banged off the crossbar during the second half of play.

“In the second half of the game, we totally controlled the ball and we had a few chances,” San Benito interim coach Matt Andrade said.

San Benito will look to snap a five-game losing streak on Thursday when it will host Everett Alvarez at 3:30 p.m.
