In a game that appeared to be heading toward a scoreless tie, Michelle Chatley pocketed the game-winner in the 75th minute and lifted the Anzar Hawks past visiting Pacific Collegiate on Monday, supplying the San Juan Bautista school with a key win in Coastal Atheletic League play.
At 4-2 in the CAL, 8-5 overall, the Hawks have now won three straight games and are suddenly making a run toward the top of the league standings.
“We definitely needed the win,” Anzar head coach Carlos Flores said. “PCS was coming at us. The girls knew we had to get a win in order to win league and maybe go to CCS.”
The loss was PCS’ first in league play this season, and the Pumas remain in front of two-loss Anzar as a result. Gonzales, meanwhile, which has one loss to PCS, is also in the running for the CAL title.
A win on Monday was necessary for Anzar to remain alive for a league championship, though, and Lauren Bellone’s through ball to Chatley in the 75th minute proved to be the difference for the Hawks.
“It looked for a while it was going to stay 0-0,” Flores said. “It came in the last few minutes.”
The Hawks will need to continue their streak in order to supplant both Gonzales and PCS, though. Anzar will visit Gonzales on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
