Although the San Benito Haybalers will send a full team — all 14 weight classes — to this weekend’s Central Coast Section Championships in San Jose, two local wrestlers were awarded a top-six seed this week.
Junior Davila at 119 pounds and Zack Rodriguez at 130 pounds were seeded in their respective weight classes. Davila will be the top seed at 119s, whereas Rodriguez was seeded fifth at 135s.
San Benito’s 12 other wrestlers were not seeded in the top six entering the year-end tournament, although the Balers’ 14 total wrestlers is nearly unrivaled. Only Saint Francis and Palma will bring an equal amount of wrestlers to San Jose on Friday and Saturday, while Gilroy and Bellarmine will bring 13.
Only the top four placers in each weight class will advance to the state meet.
Wrestling kicks off at 9 a.m. on Friday at Independence High School in San Jose, and will continue into Saturday as well. The championship finals are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
