The San Benito track and field team officially opened its 2010
campaign on Saturday at the Mount Pleasant Relays in San Jose,
where the Baler boys and Lady Balers combined to finish third
overall out of nine teams, edging out St. Ignatius by a single
point for the top-three spot.

The San Benito track and field team officially opened its 2010 campaign on Saturday at the Mount Pleasant Relays in San Jose, where the Baler boys and Lady Balers combined to finish third overall out of nine teams, edging out St. Ignatius by a single point for the top-three spot.
The Baler boys, which finished fourth among 12 boys teams, compiled 55 of San Benito’s 88 points at the relay meet.
Among other top times on the track, the team’s 4×800 was first overall after it compiled an 8:18.46 and defeated Bellarmine by more than four seconds.
In the field, San Benito’s combined high jump scores were fourth overall out of five teams, although Baler Scott Medina was tied for third individually when he leapt 5-08.
It was a similar story for the shot put as well. The Balers took fourth overall out of 10 teams, although Frankie Martinez was third individually with a 43-02.
Meanwhile, Martinez was tops in the discus with a 152-01, while San Benito was third as a team in that event. Martinez defeated Castro Valley’s Eric Mason, who was runner-up with a 151-08.
On the girls side, the Lady Balers compiled 33 points and finished eighth out of nine girls teams.
Melissa Castro earned top honors in the high jump with a 4-08, although combined as a team San Benito finished fifth in the event.
Meanwhile, Mirella Ocampo finished fourth in the discus with a 97-0, and senior Sophie Coelho easily grabbed the top spot in the pole vault with a 10-0, besting runner-up Maddy Collins of St. Ignatius by a foot.
San Benito will kick-off its Tri-County Athletic League season on Thursday when it travels to Alisal for a dual meet at 3:30 p.m.
