Despite the one-point difference, the San Benito boys tennis team remained undefeated on Thursday when it edged visiting Everett Alvarez 4-3 at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.

Now 3-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League and 4-0 overall, the Balers will put their perfect record on the line Tuesday when league power Salinas will visit Hollister.

Thursday’s singles portion ensured San Benito it would enter next week’s match with the Cowboys undefeated, as the Balers took three of the four singles matches against Everett Alvarez, as well as a doubles match that saw Michael Jensen and Conner Bray battle back from an early one-set-to-none deficit.

After falling 6-4 in the opening set to Eagles Peter Ngoy and Rainer Naquil, Jensen and Bray took the next two sets somewhat convincingly, earning a 6-2 win in the second set and a 10-1 win in the third-set tiebreaker.

Alvarez was able to corral the remaining two doubles matches, however. Eagles Justin DeLuna and Brendon Morying defeated Jacob Panger and Geoff Muzik 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) and 10-5 in the third-set tiebreaker, while Manny Flores and Harrison Nguyen defeated Travis Mills and Richard Oliverira in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

San Benito made up the difference in the singles portion, though. Top seed Kyle Skinner defeated Jeremy Ortiz 6-3, 6-4; No. 3 Austin Pan upended Daniel Chong 7-6 (7-1) 6-3; and No. 4 Eric Johnson swept Eagle Kevin Vo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Everett Alvarez managed to pick up its lone singles win at the No. 2 spot when PJ Vargas defeated Jacob Garcia 6-1, 6-4.

San Benito will now await Salinas on Tuesday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister. Match time is 4 p.m.
