SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
Behind a six-spot in the sixth, the Anzar Hawks leapfrogged visiting St. Francis 9-7 on Friday in non-conference action in San Juan Bautista, and picked up their second win of the season and first over the Watsonville school in some four years.
The Hawks (2-1), who trailed the Sharks 6-3 coming into the sixth frame, took advantage of several base on balls opportunities to upend St. Francis, which opted for a reliever to start the inning.
“We were just patient at that point,” Anzar manager Andrew Barragan said after St. Francis brought in a reliever. “We wanted to be selective, and that’s what we did.”
The sixth started with Anzar loading the bases behind a pair of walks and a hit batsman. Daniel Ornelas then drew a walk to plate a run, as did Brian Fredrickson. Two walks later, Nico Mendoza connected on a bases-loaded, 2-RBI double to complete the six-run inning.
Pitcher Nick Salgado (2.1IP, 4H, 3R, 2K, 2BB) earned the win after coming into relieve starter Devon Parish (4.2IP, 4R, 4H, 5K, 3BB). And while it is the first win over St. Francis in four years, Barragan said, Friday’s win is also a far cry from two contests last year when the Sharks defeated Anzar twice by a combined 24-0 margin.
The Hawks got on the board in the first inning behind an RBI single from Mendoza to score Parish, while Anzar added runs in the third and fifth behind solo homers from Blake Selsor and Parish.
“They were both two good shots,” said Barragan, who noted that Anzar hit just one home run during all of last year.
The Hawks will continue non-conference action on Tuesday when they will visit Gonzales at 3:30 p.m.
