WATSONVILLE
After sweeping Alisal last Thursday in the Tri-County Athletic League opener — from the varsity to the junior varsity ranks — the San Benito High track team nearly did it again on Saturday at the Wildcat Relays in Watsonville where roughly 14 teams were present.
The Baler boys earned the top spot with 83 points and the frosh/soph boys followed suit with a first-place finish and 86 points, while the Lady Balers compiled 55 points and nearly missed the No. 1 position.
The girls team finished third overall out of 14 teams, missing second place by one point and first place by six points.
The Lady Balers had plenty to show for their finish, though. In the 3,200, Vanessa Estrada (12:09.21) and Anna Duarte (12:12.27) took second and third, respectively, while the girls’ 4×800 relay was second overall in 10:19.87.
The 4×400 earned first place in 4:18.95 — some eight seconds better than Evergreen Valley.
In the field, Melissa Castro was third in the high jump at 5-0, while the shot put saw Kristal Alnas grab second with a toss of 32-04 1/2 and JT Temperino finish fourth with a throw of 30-09. Sophie Coelho cleared 10-0 in the pole vault for a second straight week, taking first place.
In the boys events, Jose Castillo (9:53.03) and Eddie Guzman (9:53.08) finished neck-and-neck in the 3,200 to earn the top two spots, while teammates Sergio Alcala (10:10.12) and Omar Vasquez (10:25.60) took fourth and fifth place in the race, respectively.
The 4×800 team was first in 8:20.67, as was the distance medley, which took first in 10:59.25. The 4×400 relay was also first in 3:29.24 — more than 10 seconds better than second-place Westmoor.
In the field, Enrique Ramos was second in the shot put with a heave of 44-06, while Frankie Martinez took first place in the discus with a toss off 149-04.
San Benito is off until March 25 when it will return to Tri-County Athletic League action against Everett Alvarez.
