Just two days after routing Anchorpoint Christian by a 15-2 margin, the Anzar Hawks picked up their second straight win over the Warriors on Friday, but by a far closer margin.

Nick Salgado was 3 of 3 with two RBI and the Hawks pocketed four runs in the fifth inning to leapfrog Anchorpoint 6-5 in Gilroy on Friday. Anzar is now 2-0 in the Coastal Athletic League and 4-3 overall.

The outcome was obviously much tighter than last Wednesday’s comfortable victory for the Hawks, although Anzar manager Andrew Barragan said his team had difficulty battling Warriors pitcher Kenneth Urbanski.

“He had us going,” Barragan said. “We touched him for that one run in the third, but we didn’t do much off of him.”

Not, at least, to the tune of 15 runs.

Anchorpoint grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and after Anzar got on the scoreboard in the third when Salgado connected on an RBI single to center field, the Warriors got the run right back in the bottom half of the inning.

“Up until the fifth inning, we only had three hits,” Barragan said. “He had us off-balance.”

Anzar finally claimed the lead in the fifth when both Daniel Ornelas and Jordan Parish reached base and Brian Fredrickson singled to right field to score one. Devon Parish then hit a sac fly to center field, scoring his brother Jordan, while Salgado and Nico Mendoza both trailed with back-to-back RBI singles to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead.

Anzar made it 6-4 in the seventh, and scored a much-needed insurance run in the process, when Ornelas hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Salgado.

Anchorpoint kept it tight in the bottom half of the inning, though. The Warriors plated one run to make it 6-5, and after reliever Adam Huaracha (4.0IP, 1H, 2BB, 1HBP, 3K) walked the next batter with two outs, Barragan brought in closer Devon Parish (.1IP) to get the final out.

Parish ended up balking, though, which moved the runner to second base, but the senior hurler got the next batter to ground out to end the game.

“We squeaked one out,” Barragan said.

Nico Mendoza (2.2IP, 5H, 4BB, 3R, 3ER, 3K) started the game for Anzar, which will visit Marina on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
