Despite finishing in seventh place with a 3-8-1 record, the San Benito Haybalers earned five all-conference selections when the Tri-County Athletic League awards were recently announced.
Andres Hurtado and Charlie Ramirez earned first-team nods in the TCAL, while teammates Frank Hernandez and Alex Alvarez were selected to the second team, interim head coach Matt Andrade said last week. Oscar Estrada was chosen to represent San Benito on the Richard Chamberlin Sportsmanship Team.
The selections came after league representatives released the awards last month, with “No names submitted” appearing under San Benito’s selections.
League representative Scott Corner said San Benito initially sent too many names for TCAL consideration. However, Andrade said he followed with two first-team selections, two second-team selections and a sportsmanship pick — the appropriate amount allotted for the Balers.
San Benito finished its season with a 6-12-1 overall record.
Meanwhile, Gilroy’s Jonathan Diaz De Leon and Alisal’s Enrique Montano shared the league’s MVP award. Diaz De Leon pocketed a team-high 10 goals for the Mustangs, while Montano had eight goals and six assists for the Trojans.
Alisal not only won the TCAL with a 10-0-2 mark and received three first-team selections as a result, but it also won the Central Coast Section Division I championship as well.
