Paige Miguel tossed her second perfect game of the season, Jessica Vest, Jessica Steigelman and Mari Vallejo each added two hits apiece, and the San Benito Lady Balers remained perfect in the Tri-County Athletic League with a 9-0 win over visiting Everett Alvarez on Thursday.
Miguel previously threw a perfect game against Piedmont Hills at the Annie Lynch Memorial Circle of Champions on March 13 — a 10-0 victory for the Lady Balers that ended after four innings.
Miguel’s no-hit, no-walk, no-error performance on Thursday lasted the full seven innings, though, and the San Benito junior struck out eight Eagles in the process.
“She pretty much dominated their hitters,” San Benito manager Scott Smith said. “Nobody could get around on her.”
Smith said the Eagles only hit one ball to the left side of the infield, with the majority of the plays going to first baseman Jessica Steigelman.
“She was throwing pretty hard,” said Smith, whose coaching staff has been working with Miguel on throwing a rise ball.
“And she threw it really well,” he added. “She kept it up in the zone and did a good job.”
San Benito supplied Miguel with the only run she would need in the third inning.
Vallejo singled on to start the inning, stole second, then later scored when Jessica Vest connected on an RBI single.
The Lady Balers tacked on eight more runs during the fourth and fifth frames, though.
In the fourth, San Benito’s Nicole Rianda, Julie Morcate and Samantha Puentes loaded the bases, and Vallejo, Marissa Adame and Steigelman each followed with RBI singles. One inning later, Vest delivered a 2-RBI single and teammate Brittany Newman followed with a 2-RBI triple.
San Benito had a total of 12 hits in the game, and improves to 10-1 on the season, 3-0 in the TCAL.
The Lady Balers will play three games on Saturday in two different tournaments, two different locations. The team will open with Wilcox at 11 a.m. at the Mission City Invitational in Santa Clara, and will then head south to play a pair of contests in the Steinbeck Classic in Salinas.
San Benito will open the Salinas tournament against Sacred Heart Cathedral at 3 p.m., and will then finish its day at 5 p.m. against either Pacific Grove or Aptos.
