Will Cross shot a 74 and the San Benito boys golf team compiled a 427 to finish in fifth place at the 37th Annual Aptos High Invitational Golf Tournament on Monday at the Seascape Golf Club.

Cross was just four strokes off of medalist Cory McElyea of Harbor, who recorded a 70 on the par-71, 6,034-yard course. Palma’s Sergio Rios (73) and Matt Ogden (73), Saratoga’s Robby Pardern (73), Aptos’ Scott Ueberrhein (74) and Evan Dunbrack (74) also carded top individual scores.

Palma, compiling a team score of 385, earned the title for the third year in a row. The Chieftains defeated Los Gatos (400), Los Altos (405) and Aptos (409), among other teams, at the 15-team tournament. Valley Christian, which recorded a 427 as well, tied the Balers for fifth place.

Meanwhile, San Benito’s Nathan Winn shot an 80 at the 18-hole tourney, Taylor Weatherly finished with an 82, Jade Kimura recorded a 90 and Andrew Colton rounded out the team with a 101.

The Balers will play in their sixth and final Tri-County Athletic League Tournament today, Thursday, at the Salinas Fairways Golf Course. Tee time is 3 p.m.
