Leone’s Lessons: Focus should be on the target, not on the mechanics

When hitting a shot on the course your focus should be on the target, not on the mechanics of your swing. We get too caught up in making the prefect swing, and we forget about what’s most important — the target.
The other night, I watched the Golf Channel. They covered a story on a golfer that lost his leg in a motorcycle accident at the age of 18. This individual was a Major League Baseball prospect, and this unfortunate accident cost him his career — but not his pride.
Soon after the accident, he started playing golf and is now trying to make it a professional career. Golf Channel’s Rich Learner interviews this remarkable individual and asked what the key was to his success. He said he focused on two things: balance and, most important, the target.
Here’s a guy with one leg and all he thinks about when he’s over a shot is the target. He said it’s like playing baseball: You never think about how you’re holding the ball; you focus on where you’re throwing it — at the target.
Swing thoughts should be made before you approach the ball. Once you commit to the shot, focus on the target and go.
This routine should be practiced on the range as well before taking it to the course.
