SAN JUAN BAUTISTA

Despite receiving 27 points from Jesse Ramirez, the Anzar High boys basketball team could not overcome Soledad on Tuesday night, falling 53-49 in non-conference action.

Ramirez led the Hawks with his point total, while teammate Nick Salgado chimed in with 12 points for Anzar. But a shortened roster didn’t help the Hawks one bit on Tuesday night.

With head coach Ed Cecena out with an illness — Anzar girls basketball coach Sam Stewart took over — the team was limited to just six players.

“But we had six players and the lead at halftime,” Stewart said.

The lack of bodies finally caught up to Anzar in the second half, though. Andres Gomez eventually fouled out as well, limiting the Anzar roster to just five players, and Soledad took advantage to escape San Juan Bautista with a four-point victory.

The loss drops Anzar to 0-3 on the early season.

The team will look to rebound and snap its current streak on Wednesday night when it will host KIPP San Jose Collegiate in San Juan Bautista. Tip-off is 5 p.m.

Anzar Girls Basketball

Although fresh off its first victory of the season, the Anzar High girls basketball dropped a 38-15 contest to Greenfield on Monday night in non-conference action.

The Hawks are now 1-8 on the season.

Anzar will host Soledad on Wednesday night in San Juan Bautista. Tip-off is 6:30 p.m.
